Did you know that arowana fish or better known among Malaysian as ‘Ikan Kelisa’ is derived from the Malay Archipelago such as Borneo, Bangka Island, Sumatra and Peninsular Malaysia. However, the highest quality of Asian arowana species is the genus Scleropages or gold arowana that can only be found in the Lake of Bukit Merah. Those days, arowana becomes a symbolic of opulence and wealth of a person.
Each year the demand is very high and it has eventually becomes an endangered species and licensed is needed either to import or export this fish from Fish Development Authorities of Malaysia (LKIM). In addition the exporter must also obtain the approval of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) approved by 72 countries.
